I find ‪#‎PRIDE‬ in sharing my country's history. The media is always portraying us like we're the lowest of the low, yet our ancestors have contributed their r...ebellious souls to many parts of the ‪#‎WORLD‬'s history....

Our country may be called the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but our history is the ‪#‎RICHEST‬ IN THE WORLD!!!

So, DON'T HATE ON ‪#‎HAITI‬, ‪#‎CONGRATULATE‬ us instead!

You probably didn't know these 25 facts about #Haiti:

- Haiti is the only nation in the world whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion.

- Haiti annexed Santo Domingo for 22 years, between 1822 and 1844. Holding the entire Island of Hispaniola under Its jurisdiction. Dominican Republic was once called "Spanish Haiti".

- Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), along with Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, is a part of an island chain known as the Greater Antilles

- Haiti was the first nation in Latin America to gain its sovereignty. Sovereignty means a state or a governing body has the full right and power to govern itself without any interference from outside sources or bodies.

- Haiti is the only independent Francophone nation in Latin America. All the other French-speaking Latin American nations are overseas departments of France.

- Haiti Exports are apparel, manufactures, oils, cocoa, mangoes and coffee

- Haiti Imports are food, manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment
fuels and raw materials

- Haiti is divided into 10 departments - Artibonite, Centre, Grand'Anse, Nippes, Nord, Nord-Est, Nord-Ouest, Oues, Sud-Est and Sud. The 10 departments of Haiti are further divided into 41 arrondissements, and 133 communes.

-The main industries of Haiti are sugar refining, flour milling, textiles and cement.

- Haiti is the second (after the USA) democracy of the New World.

- Artibonite River is the Longest River in Haiti

- Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean, after the Dominican Republic and Cuba, which is the largest.

- The Citadel is a large mountaintop fortress located in northern Haiti. It is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere.

- Haiti is the most mountainous nation in the Caribbean.

- Eighty percent of schools in Haiti are private, and religious groups run many of them. The remaining 20% are state-run. Students learn their lessons in both French and Creole.

- Haitian women were allowed to vote from 1950.

- Tourism is one of the largest industries in Haiti, with nearly a million visitors arriving by cruise ship. Most cruisers call at Labadee, a private resort leased to Royal Caribbean International until 2050. Labadee, located on the northern coast of Haiti, is named after Marquis de La Badie, a Frenchman who first settled the area in the 17th century. The spelling was changed to “Labadee” to make it easier for English-speakers to pronounce.

- Haiti has the second longest coastline in the Caribbean after Cuba; 1.100 miles. Over 70% of its beaches are still virgin.

- The first country in the Western Hemisphere to abolished slavery; it would take the United States of America another 65 years to follow suit.

- The only country in the Western Hemisphere to have defeated three colonial armies for its independence. The powerful armies of Spain, England and France.

- The Independence of Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela was a result of direct monetary and military help from Haiti to Simon Bolivar, the greatest Hispanic military leader of all time.

- The National flag of Venezuela was created at the sea port of Jacmel, a city in south east Haiti. Simon Bolivar included the blue and red from the Haitian Flag, as part of the new colors of Venezuela's national symbol in honor of Haiti being the first country in the world to fully eradicate slavery on its soil.

- Haiti supplied France for over half the wealth it derived from all its other colonies combined in the 18th century.

- For 105 years (1697-1802) Haiti was responsible for 40% of the sugar consumed in the entire world; 123 millions pounds in 1788 alone.

- For much of the 17th and the 18th century, Haiti was responsible for 60% of the world's coffee exports.
